Microsoft Tweaks Windows 8, Blamed For PC Slump

<p> FILE - In this Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012 file photo, the Microsoft Corp. logo, left, is seen on an exterior wall of a new Microsoft store inside the Prudential Center mall, in Boston. Microsoft will use its annual developers conference to release a preview of Windows 8.1, a free update that promises to address some of the gripes people have with the latest version of the company’s flagship operating system. The Build conference, which starts Wednesday, June 26, 2013, in San Francisco, will give Microsoft’s partners and other technology developers a chance to try out the new system before it becomes available to the general public later in the year.  Microsoft on Wednesday released a preview version of an update to Windows 8, aiming to address some of the gripes people have with the company’s flagship operating system.
At a conference in San Francisco, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer acknowledged that the company pushed hard to get people to adopt a radical new tile-based “Modern” user interface in Windows 8. Microsoft is now back-pedaling, making it easier to reach and use the older “desktop” interface.
“Let’s make it easier to start applications the way we’re used to,” Ballmer told the audience of software developers. “What we will show you today is a refined blend of our Desktop experience and our Modern experience.”
Microsoft made the preview of Windows 8.1 available for free as a download.
Windows 8.1 will allow people to boot up in Desktop mode. There, they’ll find a button that resembles the old Start button. It won’t take users to the old Start menu, but to the new “Modern” Windows 8 start screen. Still, the re-introduction of the familiar button may make it easier for longtime Windows users to get accustomed to the changes. A common complaint about Windows 8 is that it hides features and functions, and replaces buttons with gestures and invisible click zones that have to be memorized.
Other new features of Windows 8.1 include more options to use multiple apps. People will be able to determine how much of the screen each app takes while showing up to four different programs, rather than just two. The update will also offer more integrated search results, showing users previews of websites, apps and documents that are on the device, all at once.
Microsoft also touted a broadening array of applications specifically written for Windows 8, among them one from Facebook.
Frank Gillett, an analyst with research firm Forrester, said that with 8.1, Microsoft is doing a better job of uniting the Desktop and Modern screens, but the changes don’t run deep.
“They smoothed off some rough edges, but they don’t fundamentally change the experience of having two experiences within one operating system,” he said.
The preview version of Windows 8.1 is meant for Microsoft’s partners and other technology developers, but anyone can download it. The release comes exactly eight months after desktops, laptops and tablets with Windows 8 went on sale. The version of the Windows 8.1 update meant for the general public will come later in the year, though the company hasn’t announced a specific date.
Julie Larson-Green, the head of Microsoft’s Windows division, said the update, rapid by Microsoft standards, “shows how much more responsive our engineering has become.”
Many of the new features have been shown already. A three-day Build conference, which started Wednesday in San Francisco, gives Microsoft developers a chance to learn more about the new system and try it out. It also will give the company a chance to explain some of the reasoning behind the update and sell developers on Microsoft’s ambitions to regain relevance lost to Apple’s iPad and various devices running Google’s Android software.
Windows 8, released Oct. 26, was meant to be Microsoft’s answer to changing customer behaviors and the rise of tablet computers. The operating system emphasizes touch controls over the mouse and the keyboard, which had been the main way people have interacted with their personal computers since the 1980s.
Microsoft and PC makers had been looking to Windows 8 to revive sales of personal computers, but some people have been put off by the radical makeover. Research firm IDC said the operating system actually slowed down the market. Although Microsoft says it has sold more than 100 million Windows 8 licenses so far, IDC said worldwide shipments of personal computers fell 14 percent in the first three months of this year, the worst since tracking began in 1994.
Windows 8 was also supposed to make Microsoft more competitive in the growing market for tablet computers. But Windows tablets had less than a 4 percent market share in the first quarter, compared with 57 percent for Android and 40 percent for Apple’s iPad.
One big problem is the fact that Windows 8 doesn’t work well on smaller screens, making Windows tablets less competitive with cheaper tablets such as Apple’s iPad Mini, Google’s Nexus 7 and Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD. Microsoft built Windows 8 primarily to run on tablets with 10-inch to 12-inch screens, and it is trying to address that shortcoming in Windows 8.1.
It’s crucial that Microsoft sets things right with Windows 8.1 because the outlook for the PC market keeps getting gloomier. IDC now expects PC shipments to fall by nearly 8 percent this year, worse than its previous forecast of a 1 percent dip. IDC also anticipates tablets will outsell laptop computers for the first time this year.
Microsoft is addressing that shift by banking its future on touch controls. Its strategy calls for having just one operating system work on both tablets and traditional computers. That allows popular Windows programs such as Office to work well on tablets, too. But in making Windows easy for touch screens, mouse and keyboard commands are more complex to use and figure out.
Apple and Google, on the other hand, believe people use those machines differently and have opted to keep their operating systems separate. Apple, for instance, believes that it can be tiresome to have to constantly move your arm to touch a desktop or laptop screen. That’s not a problem with tablets because you’re already holding it.
As for the growing interest in smaller, cheaper tablets, Microsoft has said the company is working with other manufacturers to make some. At the conference, it didn’t confirm reports that it is making its own.
Microsoft also said very little about Windows RT, the Windows 8 variant that’s designed to run on the same phone-style processors that let the iPad and Android tablets be lighter and have longer battery lives than Windows 8 tablets with PC-style Intel processors. Windows RT has been hamstrung by a lack of applications, since it won’t run older Windows programs.
At the conference, Microsoft showed off an Acer tablet with an 8-inch screen — a size that would be a good fit for an RT device — but it ran full-blown Windows 8 instead.
Microsoft Corp. just cut the effective price of its Surface tablet with Windows RT by including a keyboard cover for free. The cover sells for $120 or $130 on its own.
Microsoft also said this month that it would give buyers of the RT version of Surface the Outlook email and calendar program at no extra charge — joining other Office freebies Excel, Word and Power Point — and sweetening the offer for the device that is priced starting at $499. The new programs will come as part of the Windows 8.1 update

Post titleDetails On Apple’s iWatch And New iPhone Emerge

It doesn’t appear to be a slow summer for Apple, which is working on various new products, according to reports, including having filed for a trademark in Japan on the name “iWatch.”
That might be a good name for the Cupertino, Calif.-based company’s rumored smartwatch device, which is said to pair with the iPhone and display notifications and other information. The trademark was filed on June 3 with the Japan Patent Office and made public last week, Bloomberg and Reuters first reported.
Apple would not comment on the reports when reached by ABC News, but Apple CEO Tim Cook addressed the wearable gadget category last month at the All Things D conference and said that the wrist was a “interesting” and “natural” spot for a wearable devices, at least in comparison to Google Glass.
“There are lots of gadgets in this space right now, but there’s nothing great out there,” Cook said at the technology conference. “But none of them are going to convince a kid that hasn’t worn glasses or a band to wear one. There are a lot of problems to solve in this space. It’s ripe for exploration.” Recently a number of fitness wristbands were released, which pair with a phone and track steps and calories burned.
The iWatch would be a new category or type of device for Apple, but the company is also planning to refresh its iPhone. The iPhone 5S has already been rumored to have the same design as the currentiPhone 5, but have aa faster chip and a fingerprint reader. The International Business Times reports that it will launch on September 20. Apple released the iPhone 5 last September 21.
In addition to the slightly refreshed 5S, Apple is said to be working on a lower-cost iPhone, which will have a plastic shell available in a range of colors. Purported photos of the green version of the phone have emerged on French site Nowhereelse.
Apple previewed the next version of its iOS 7 operating system for the iPhone and iPad last month. The software has been drastically overhauled with a brand new more colorful design and a host of new features. iOS 7 is due out this fall.

Samsung’s New Hybrid Tablet Takes Aim at Apple’s iPad

Source: Samsung.com
Does Samsung’s new ATIV Q hybrid tablet pose a threat to Apple’s tablet market dominance? Ever since Apple unveiled its first iPad in 2010, the Cupertino-based company has consistently dominated the U.S. tablet market.

Although Samsung appears to be closing in on Apple in the U.S. OEM smartphone market with a 23 percent share compared to the iPhone’s 39.2 percent share, it’s another story when it comes to tablets. According to an anonymous Samsung source via the Korea Times, “Samsung’s tablet share in the U.S. is hovering around 13 percent, well below Apple’s 50 percent. Our technicians and management are now trying to come up with a different approach.”
Now it appears that part of Samsung’s new approach is to compete with Apple in the high-end tablet market. Samsung is taking aim at the iPad by releasing its own high-quality tablet that will be powered by both Microsoft’s  Windows 8 and Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android. Besides having a dual operating system, the device also features a multi-functional hardware design that lets it transform from a tablet to an ultramobile-type laptop.

Pastor Kumuyi To Resign Due To Son's Wedding Controversy

Pastor William Kumuyi  offered to resign as General Superintendent of the Deeper Life Bible Church following the controversy that trailed the wedding of his second son, John.
John Kumuyi and his wife, Love had engaged in acts, which negated the church’s tradition during their wedding held in Jamaica on June 15, 2013. Love, who is a daughter of the National Overseer of Deeper Life Bible Church, Jamaica, Pastor Augustine Odih,  was dressed in a fitted stylish wedding gown with transparent short sleeves. She also wore makeup, jewelry and carried a bouquet of flowers. The couple cruised in a limousine and had a huge wedding cake.

The misdemeanor, which attracted widespread criticisms, had earned the newlyweds suspension from church activities despite showing remorse and tendering an apology to the church, blaming their misconduct on the fact that both of them had resided abroad for so long.

Sunday Sun gathered that the practice in the Deeper Christian Life Ministry is that if members’ children misbehave, both the children and their parents get punished on the grounds that it’s the parents’ failing in their responsibilities that made the children to err. Although the children involved in the Jamaican wedding infraction are adults, the leadership of the church regarded their action as a strong breach of its tradition, and immediately removed the bride’s father,  from his position as National Overseer in Jamaica.
To demonstrate that there is no double standard in the church, it was further learnt that Pastor Kumuyi, at the meeting held by the leadership of the church on the matter, offered to resign as General Superintendent, but was prevailed upon not to.
According to the Sunday Sun source, the General Superintendent did not take kindly to the couple’s behaviour and, unlike Eli in the Bible who did not discipline his sons and incurred the wrath of God, Pastor Kumuyi had ensured that the offenders were sanctioned.

Magic Draft Oladipo compared to Wade

Magic Draft Oladipo compared to Wade

oladipoVictor Oladipo was drafted second overall by the Orlando Magic on Thursday night and he’s now being compared to one of the NBA’s biggest stars. Dwyane Wade just won his second straight title and anyone in the league would love to be in his position. If all things keep pointing in the right direction for Oladipo, he may just get that chance. The 21-year-old has recently been compared to the Miami Heat star and the Magic would love for their newest guard to produce at the same level as one of the league’s best.

Wade has the clutch gene, so only time will tell how good Oladipo
really is. For the time being, the college standout is just trying to be the best player he can be.
“I don’t know whether it’s fair or it’s just because Tom Crean is my coach,” Oladipo said Friday, according to The Associated Press. ”We have similar parts to our game. I’m just trying to be the best Victor Oladipo possible.”
He’s a product of Indiana University’s basketball team which is led by head coach Tom Crean. The 47-year-old coached Wade during his time at Marquette University and he originally compared the two players.
“I’m not big on comparisons because it’s not fair to Dwyane,” Crean explained. ”Dwyane’s one of the best players in the world, and Victor just turned 21. When it comes to the kind of people that they are, the kind of teammates they are, the way they made their teammates better, (the comparison) is huge.”
That’s a great start for Oladipo and he hasn’t even hit the court with his new Magic teammates yet. During his final season at Indiana, Oladipo average 13.6 points a game compared to higher numbers from most top five draft picks.
He went No. 2 to the Magic just behind Anthony Bennett, but his college numbers don’t seem to be a worry for Orlando in the slightest bit.
