Magic Draft Oladipo compared to Wade
Victor Oladipo was drafted second
overall by the Orlando Magic on Thursday night and he’s now being
compared to one of the NBA’s biggest stars. Dwyane Wade just won his
second straight title and anyone in the league would love to be in his
position. If all things keep pointing in the right
direction for Oladipo, he may just get that chance. The 21-year-old has
recently been compared to the Miami Heat star and the Magic would love
for their newest guard to produce at the same level as one of the
league’s best.
Wade has the clutch gene, so only time
will tell how good Oladipo
really is. For the time being, the college
standout is just trying to be the best player he can be.
“I don’t know whether it’s fair or it’s just because Tom Crean is my coach,” Oladipo said Friday, according to The Associated Press. ”We have similar parts to our game. I’m just trying to be the best Victor Oladipo possible.”
He’s a product of Indiana University’s
basketball team which is led by head coach Tom Crean. The 47-year-old
coached Wade during his time at Marquette University and he originally
compared the two players.
“I’m not big on comparisons because it’s
not fair to Dwyane,” Crean explained. ”Dwyane’s one of the best players
in the world, and Victor just turned 21. When it comes to the kind of
people that they are, the kind of teammates they are, the way they made
their teammates better, (the comparison) is huge.”
That’s a great start for Oladipo and he
hasn’t even hit the court with his new Magic teammates yet. During his
final season at Indiana, Oladipo average 13.6 points a game compared to
higher numbers from most top five draft picks.
He went No. 2 to the Magic just behind
Anthony Bennett, but his college numbers don’t seem to be a worry for
Orlando in the slightest bit.
